Six ways to reduce waste of your winter feeds.

With the cost of supplement feed for your animals ever increasing its makes sense to keep wastage to a minimum, here are six ways to help:

  • If possible only feed out what will be eaten in one day, if the feed is around for longer than this it is more likely to get into the ground.

  • Don’t feed too much, an animal can eat 30-40% more than it needs if it has unrestricted access to feed.
  • If feeding out on the ground, feed in dry areas where less mud is present, feeding along fence lines can also reduce wastage.
  • Feeding using a hay feeder/rack can save 15-20% over feeding straight on the ground, this is a huge saving when totaled up over the winter months.
  • Keeping your feed fresh, i.e. baleage moist and hay dry, this will increase utilization.
  • If break feeding grass and feeding a supplement, feed the supplement first and when it all gone then let them into the new break.

For a useful tool to minimize your feed wastage check out our Big Bale Feeder here.

Happy Feeding
